Understanding (Sound Asleep) - Sound Asleep EP track 3 Italics are spoken words by Ben and backing vocals.
0:00 - 0:17
You hold the answer
0:20 - 0:33
The pain that grips you The fear that binds you (haah) Releases life in me In our mutual Shame we hide our eyes To blind them from the truth That finds a way for who we are
Please don't be afraid When the darkness fades away The dawn will break the silence Screaming in our hearts My love for you still grows This I do for you For I’ve tried to fight the truth my final time
1:37 Ahhh Ahhhh Ahh 1:53
Can't wash it all away Can't wish it all away (ahhh ahhh) Can't cry it all away Can't scratch it all away
2:16 Ahhh Ahhhhh Ahhh 2:26
Lying beside you (Lying beside you) Listening to you breathe The life that flows inside of you Burns inside of me
Hold and speak to me Of love without a sound Tell me you will live through this And I will die for you (I will die today, die today)
Cast me not away Say you'll be with me For I know I cannot Bear it all alone
3:17 Ahhh Ahhhh Ahhh 3:29
Can't fight it all away Can't hope it all away (Ahhh ahhh) Can't scream it all away It just won't fade away
3:52 Ahhh ahhh 4:18
I've tried so hard
“I have tried super.. so hard. To be without you for so many years.”
And I have cried
“So many words I have saved upon someone one. I love you, I love you, and I want you to stay."

Some info:
This version is said to be the last time Evanescence ever records Understanding. I dunno what in the world their sudden hatred toward the song is for, however one can only assume. (On Exodus Discography, it SPECIFCALLY mentions this is the last place to it be seen. By WHY this song? What about WWYG? That was last seen on Origin? Why not them saying it's the last time WWYG will be seen/recorded? Or any other never before heard of except once song. WHY Understanding is the last to be seen specifically?) The ending part is very echoed...you can practically only hear Amy saying 'I've tried so hard, and I have cried' and then Ben's vibrated voice.

My guess is that comment dates back to when they released the Sound Asleep EP. It's the only song that was on both EPs, and if my understanding is right, it was probably one of their most popular songs at the time (since it had been played on the radio), and they had maybe already done an acoustic version of the song at that point. So "Understanding": 3; everything else: 1. They were probably sick of redoing it, or they worried that people were going to think they were just going to keep re-releasing it, or that was the song everybody wanted (like the "Bring Me to Life" of the time), which was why it appeared on two releases in the same form, but Evanescence wanted to move on. I interpret the statement as either "Okay, we put this on our first two releases, but we promise it isn't going to be on any others!" or "We put this on two releases! If you still don't have it, tough."
Of course, as we now know that Evanescence has a long history of remaking songs, the statement is ironic. I'd rather like to have a remade version of "Understanding", though, because I really like the song, but I'm not a fan of the EP days in general. I only like to listen to "Understanding", "Exodus", and "Whisper" from the EPs. I'd listen to "Forgive Me", too (it sounds fine), but it never really grew on me, for some reason. A newer version done by more experienced musicians would have been nice.
