Grrr. I hate job hunting. I can't seem to get hired anywhere... I've applied at tons of places, gone in for a few interviews [where they said they'd call me back but never did and every time I call the manager, they are not there D:<], and I still can't seem to find a job. I've even had to stop driving, since gas here is about $4.45/gallon and my parents don't need to be paying for fuel for their cars and mine. But oh well. I like walking. It's nice. So I was just wondering if anyone has had similar or different problems or any advice on trying to find a job. Basically, it's just a thread about job searching. =P

I had the same problem when I applied for jobs last year.
Only one place ever scheduled an interview for me. The interview didn't seem to go too well. The lady asked me questions and made me feel kind of uncomfortable. I guess the next time I'm in that situation, I just have to lie so that my answers look good. It's a shame though that lady had to be so judgmental. I would have been a very good worker at that place.
Meh... I'll just get a job when I'm in college. I don't need one for high school.

EVERYONE is having problems finding a job, I'm 19 and don't have a job. I should probably look a bit better...but, whatever. I'm trying.
Anyways, the reason your having a hard time is are economy is not good, thousands of people WITH experience are being laid off and can't find a job.
So your not the only one, and this problem will go on for awhile until are economy is good again.
I think some places are going to be a bit more "judgmental", because of the economy...they want someone really, really good (not saying your not) or people who they know they can completely count on. Its just a matter of sticking with applications and hoping/praying etc. that someone will hire you.
I think I read that it's going to be a bit harder for teens getting jobs, just because the way the economy is going.

Jessica's hit it on the head. Jobs just aren't to be had right now. I'm losing my child support ($526 a month) next month. So, my daughter needs a job now that she's out of high school. Can't find one in this town. Too many people like me who need second jobs already have them all.

I really, really wish are government would do something...instead of talk about doing something.
I'm starting to think the only way I'll get a "good" job, or be looked at, is too go to college...but I wanted a job first to save money, because college in this country is over priced. I mean honestly, nobody should be in debt from going to college...

Read some Canadian news the other day. Not much better up there. Their economy is linked to ours. But I think it's more than just N. America. Gas prices has caused a worldwide slump where the prices are high. OPEC is trying to figure out why the prices are so high. Demand hasn't gone up, so the prices shouldn't have increased. Our prices have come down $.50 this week.

Reading you guys' posts makes me happy that I have the opportunity to be back in school.
At first, I really wanted to work. But indeed, finding a job is so not easy when you don't have a job title. I went to see career counsellors, and although they were paid by the governement, none of them could tell me where the heck I could apply with my diploma.
That was depressing. Even more depressing was I talked to a bunch of pple working in the field of mental/physical health and NONE of them could tell me of a job I could do with my stupid diploma. If I had to do it all over, I'd make sure to get a marketable diploma. That would save me lots of trouble.

That's kind of why I'm proud of what I'm doing in school right now. I don't know if you guys know about IB [International Baccalaureate], but it's this program that I take in school.
The classes are a bit more challenging than regular and honor classes and are among the difficulties of AP classes. You basically take this advanced course and then you can take a comprehensive test on that subject. I am an IB Diploma Candidate and that means I am in six IB classes and over the course of two years am taking six comprehensive tests in the subjects I've studied. For me, they will be Chemistry, Physics, History, Spanish, Math, and English. You need a total of 24 points to get your diploma, so usually four points on each exam is required. But you just need the total of 24 points and can get them by any means necessary. Like... I got a 2 on the Chem test and a 2 on the Physics test. That leaves me with 20 more points and four more tests to take. There are a few ways to get extra points through an IB-required class called Theory of Knowledge and an Extended Essay that must be written by all candidates. There are three make up points, so if I get those points, that leaves me with 17 more points to get, which I think is fairly reasonable.
ANYWAYS. This diploma is recognized by some colleges and if I score a 5 or higher on a subject, I could possibly even get college credit for that. So depending on the college I go to, this diploma could greatly help my chances of getting in and getting a good job. I highly recommend taking this program if you are given the chance. It's not really that much work, but it is a bit tougher than normal high school classes.

You US have colleges which are darn competitive. Well, at least to my understanding it seems a lot more competitive then here in Quebec.
In any case, I did not do that much extra curricular stuff, and I barely have one week of job experience; but I still manage to get to the masters. My understanding is that a lot of it has to do with planning. If you know were you wanna get and what skills they are looking for, then you just aim for these skills.
That's what I did and I got it. I do like to keep things simple. lol
Then again, maybe part of it is just luck, my program is brand new of this year. So, I don't know how my technique would work in other's area.
All this being said, that's great that you putting the effort to work a tad hard Jakey. Sometimes a lil' more work goes a long way, and I bet these credentials will really help you when you'll apply to be a MD

I've heard about the IB program. Unfortunately, they don't have it at my school, but it may be introduced to my school within the next few years or so. Anyways, I was in AP level classes during my Freshman year (they weren't actually AP classes, but like pre-AP classes, so to speak). They were very difficult classes and the teachers were just awful. They specifically targeted me and treated me like I was a piece of garbage. They would shout personal information about students in front of the whole class just to embarrass people and ultimately humiliate them. They didn't like me just because I was different from my "perfect" peers. Some of the students in those classes were very conceited as well. A few among them decided to make my life a living hell. They would whisper things about me and say things indirectly about me just to seem clever. I knew that they were making fun of me though, and I just tried to ignore them. All of these factors unfortunately affected my work and ended my life as a straight A student forever. Now, I'm just in one honors class (English) and a bunch of college prep classes. The students are usually much nicer than those in my former classes, but shit still happens. I don't think that I will ever apply for any advanced level classes just because of my experience in those type of classes for that one year, which really is a shame. I know that I'm smart, but I just can't deal with those type of people anymore if it affects my work (and trust me, there are still conceited people in my college prep classes), so I just do easier work. Maybe, if I was in a different learning environment, things would have played out differently but, oh well, what can I do now? I'm glad that the IB classes are working out for you though, Jake. I'm currently still looking for a job, but I think that I will be able to find one when August comes and kids begin retreating back to their college campuses.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate it.
And actually, Mary, I'm not so sure I want to be a doctor anymore... I was thinking about it and that's a lot of work and I'm not even very passionate about it... I mean... I hate doing busy work and doctors have a lot of that. It's a very hard road to travel, and I'm just not thinking that it will ultimately be worth it to me in the end.
I'm thinking about something in advertising, at the moment. I actually just applied for a job as an office assistant for a toy company that's not too far away. They want someone with experience in Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator [GO JAKE GO!] and I think that would be an awesome job. ^^,
